Poverty and extreme wealth in this day and age

I watched a Mr Wendall today sitting in his usual spot on Queen St and I wondered how awful it must feel to be at the mercy of a few generous people to survive.  I mean, its 2011, and we still have poverty and homelessness.  This isn't just a problem for us folk in little ol NZ though - its a global, universal issue.

I am aware that there are a few who live on the streets by choice - but we all have a story, and  we should refrain from being judgemental.  I too am guilty of getting angry and thinking I'll never give to the homeless again - especially when I see the bloke I've just given a tenner to, now walking down the street with a couple of Woodies cans.  But when I come home to my Central Auckland villa with air conditioning and unlimited hot water - I realise how good I've got it and that tenner probably would have gone on something I didn't need anyway.

It perplexes me how we live in a world with extreme poverty and extreme wealth.  Will we ever find a balance?
